About Us

Tropicana Supermarket is a family owned group of supermarkets that started out as a dream.
The founder, Felipe Gutierrez, was born and raised in the Dominican Republic. He always dreamed of owning his own supermarket.

Immigrating to New York in the 1980s with his family, he worked very hard to get ahead. In the early 90s, he bought his first business, a local video store. Although it was not very profitable, he felt that it was a good stepping stone and learning experience for the future. A few years later, he purchased a deli in Brooklyn, NY with his brother. They worked 6 years together, and sold it in search of a better future, and a bigger and better business. A few years later, while at the barbershop, an opportunity presented itself. He learned about a supermarket for sale in another state, North Carolina. After taking a trip to see it and looking around the area, he instantly felt that this was the business for him. He went back to New York and started the process of purchasing this store, and moving to North Carolina.

The first Tropicana Supermarket was established in 2007. Currently, there are 5 Tropicana Supermarkets – Clinton, Goldsboro, Greenville, Dunn and Durham – all owned by family members, sister, brothers, cousin, son and nephew.

The goal of Tropicana Supermarket is to provide products from around the world, to customers of diverse backgrounds. We want Tropicana Supermarket to feel welcoming to every customer.
We strive to provide excellent customer service and to help our customers find what they are looking for. We have an expansive produce department offering fresh fruits and vegetables from many different countries. Our meat department specializes in many different custom cuts of fresh meats. We strive to have grocery items from many different countries to offer customers what they need. There is no better feeling than having a customer tell you that it feels so welcoming to be able to come to the store and find products from their homeland.

Aside from groceries, meats and produce, Tropicana Supermarket offers a variety of services, including check cashing, money transfers, money orders and bill payments. We are a full- service international supermarket and are proud members of the communities we serve.
